Democracy and Indian People

       Por Francisco Martínez Gracián

Michoacan has experienced many historic changes and breakthroughs. Unfortunately, non of these changes has touched the deep truth of our state yet. We still live with somewhat of a patriarchal entity. Although we have passed the 21st Century, Michoacan continues being in a pre- modern state. Not modern due to the fact that improvement would require effort and participation to develop a modem state. Beginning with the marginated classes which are the neediest. Truthfully, throughout the last decades regional developments that have been implemented, and have encouraged improvement to different extents. But consequentially as a result, it becomes uneglegible the rise of two social classes: the business class and the working (urban) class. But even these continue having a connection to the paternity to the state of Michoacan. On the way to modernization, the exclusion such as it proceeds, ended up emitting a card of citizenship to a strong, political burocracy incrusted both: in the governmental bureau and political parties. Encouragement to a strong move towards modernization continues, but always to a certain extent. Without a doubt being one of the main obstacles faced by the change. Overall, mainly that of the population in the society and Indian groups. From this emerges the necessary idea of correcting the democracy in Michoacan. There is no democracy without modernization. Yet indigenous people and marginated classes don't represent an obstacle to be summed to the democratic challenge, but to the burocracy. Then it becomes the turn to the society below, like a necessary right, to take the responsibility. This demands a clear vision of the real state. Congruence.

Tenancy. This also takes the need of liberating from the personal ideals of closed systems. Characteristic sometimes used with justice towards conservative groups, groups of the right. Only that those of the left, with criticism and anti-dogmatisms have aroused many dogmatism towards themselves. Which has presented challenges by the marginated groups, and has furthered a chance to modernize democracy. Such if it could happen if each group from above, in any matter of trenches, would have to between each other's eyes and contaminate or perturb the electoral process that has begun in the state.

This pushes and encourages the necessary unity. Hard when it comes to the society in Michoacan and the political parties that evolve. We go through a very deep crisis, the lack of congruency. Need that have ended up affecting our principles. Finally, everything is relative and everything is permitted ... as long as it provides a base to be seated in the chair. Fatal ideals that become an obstacle to the necessary base of the real democracy and real modernization. All because both democracy and modernization don't happen as soon as they systematically happen by not taking to consideration the excluded c1asses. Which invariably conduces to itself and its perversion towards an irrevocable decline.

It is then when the society in Michoacan should turn to see and learn from below. Primarily, from the indigenous class. Not for no reason did the indigenous society, which I refer to towards p´urhépecha race, has battled for more than 500 years. They have suffered innumerable struggles and haven't lost their mist or have perverted their ideology or even changed their direction. Even less, although they have had worries, their intense sense of community has kept them unified with each other. Which qualifies them, when it comes to equality, like the most modern with itself and most democratic. It's there, and I don't mean to manipulate it, but not only do the political parties and the society of Michoacan in general, but the state itself, we should start to look for authentic breakthroughs and elements to renovate criticism.
